I painted over a landscape painting to get this one and there is only a speck or two that is left of the original painting. I wanted to create beautiful color. As one of my friends likes to say, “I just wanted to push paint around.”

Our outdoor painting group “Vistas & Vineyards” has started up again with our annual trip to Garland Nursery in Corvallis, Oregon. There is always so much to choose from to paint here, but I settled on some pots of flowers and a steel bike “planter.” The temperature was cool but it felt great to be outside to paint again.

I continue to make a liar out of myself by painting flowers. Three weeks ago I stated in public that I don’t paint florals or still life because I’m not a gardener or a collector of things.  I think that I paint landscapes or figures like crazy for a while and then need a visual break and a different kind of challenge.  This must be my break.

I started sketching these flowers and came up with a decent composition.  First I started painting big white blossoms but it never wowed me.  I kept painting from the sketch and photo the first day, but when I came back to it the next day I put those away and concentrated on what was happening on the canvas.   Next I plan on doing a large canvas full of flowers!

Another very playful painting … Just having fun!  Last February I wrote a newsletter about naming paintings, its difficulty, necessity and process.  This one just popped into my head as I sat down at the computer to save it.  It is nice when this happens.

I challenged the DWP artists to paint something that had a “Back to School” significance.  For me, often the beginning of the school year meant new starts … including a few new clothes in my closet.

In 2009 a group of acrylic painters here in the Corvallis, Oregon area got together to talk, exchange ideas, have shows together etc.  They decided to have a “response” challenge where everyone would submit one painting (decided by the group) and each painter would have a one month period in which to respond to the painting in any manner they wished.   Then the original 11 or 12 paintings would rotate.

The group chose my painting below with which to paint responses.  I didn’t continue with the group as my goals were different, but I wished them well and left my painting in their capable hands.  They are having a show starting May 11, 2012 at the Benton County Museum in Philomath which I am looking forward to seeing.

Since the painting below was done in 2008, I thought I would do my own “response painting” to it today.

One afternoon while visiting my grandparents as a young girl, my grama said that there was “a nice ripe banana in the kitchen if I wanted it.”  I raced into the kitchen to find a bowl of blackened bananas.   She was an amazing cook, but obviously we had a different idea of a ripe banana!
