The photograph was provided by Judy Odom.  She wanted an image of a boxer to put into needlepoint so I asked her to send me a photo of her own boxer named Butch.  Kathy’s Needleworks takes some of my images and puts them onto needlepoint canvas … very cool actually.

I was in Portland Oregon the other day and while at a stop light I grabbed my camera to take a photo of this woman and her dog.  Through the grimy windshield, too far away and worried about the traffic light changing … this is how I take many of my reference photos 🙂

For this lovely cocker spaniel, I worked from a photo from Li Goce.  She sent me a couple of wonderful images, so you might be seeing another one in the future.  I love the eyes on this dog!

I took a few photos on the sly of this Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier last weekend while at the Clothesline Sale. She didn’t stand still for a moment and most of the photos were blurry but I did manage to get a couple.

This painting was done from a photo which was sent to me when I put out a call for good animal photos from which to paint.  When I saw this one I wanted to paint it right away.  What attitude!  The photographer does not want credit so I will leave her name out of it.  Thank you for the photo!

In an interview for an exhibit I had 18 years ago with my mother, I was quoted as saying that I would paint anything, “cars, trashcans, flowers, snow scenes …” and the same is true today.  With this scene from google maps street view, I painted the dog in the street, but would have been just as happy with the street view, or some of the old buildings.

This painting is a submission for the Virtual Paint Out blog. Their area of concentration this month is Valparaiso, Chile.

This painting is a submission for the Virtual Paint Out blog. Their area of concentration this month is Slovakia.  I thought I would add the link to the actual Google Street View scene that I used to show you what I did with the information.

Click here to see the actual place on Google Street View.  You can see that I used the bicycle, the basket, part of the man’s pose including his right arm and left leg and shoe.  I changed his sex.  I changed his left arm position as it looked like he was picking his nose, changed the package in the basket to a large dog and added a smaller dog looking at him.  I removed all the background including the second person except for a little of the curb.  I was trying for a little humor as the title of the painting hopefully suggests.

I took photos of this dog with my phone outside of a market.  I felt sneaky as the owner was not around (I would have asked permission if she/he had been).  This was a large, beautiful dog with soft floppy ears and a very thick coat who was very uninterested in the fame of having his picture taken.
