I gave a talk to a high school art class the other day on being a professional artist.  I hope the students enjoyed it as I know that I did.

One of the things that I said was that as we continue to paint, our style cannot help but change and that I’m not even sure that I could paint how I did a few years ago.  I first painted this painting in 2008 and no longer have the photo of it back then.  Then I worked on it again about four years later and finally again this weekend.

Below is the photo of how it looked before I worked on it over the last couple of days.  I feel the new version is less jarring, more peaceful.  The golden hill really came forward and the texture in the bushes and some of the land demanded a lot of attention as did the black areas.

This is the second painting I have finished recently from reference photos that I took while walking in MacDonald Forest in Corvallis, Oregon.

I’ve included a couple of photographs of it hanging on a wall in my house too.   (Note:  the wall outlet is 4.5″ x 2.75″).   In the second photo you can see how I’ve continued the image around the edge of the canvas.

There are some beautiful trees where I enjoy walking in MacDonald Forest at the end of Oak Creek Drive.  I have taken some photographs of them.  They are huge!

This is the largest painting I have ever finished.  We hung it in the living room so that I could photograph it on the wall and it made the 4′ x 3′ painting that had been hanging there look very small indeed.

It is raining and quite dark today so I had to turn on every light I could which made the light look a warm yellow.

You might have noticed that I haven’t been producing as many paintings lately.  I continually change, rework, or paint over every painting that I create.  Because I have this “Clothesline Sale” coming up this Saturday, I am madly touching up and changing many of my paintings, both large and small.

There are over 60 artists with original work in acrylic, watercolor, pastel, oil, ink or graphite and photography.

I will have many of my daily paintings as well as some of my larger pieces for sale.  I’ll also have a couple of my sketchbooks there for you to check through.

Please stop by if you are in the area.  I’d love to see you.

Yesterday I was painting with a friend who is teaching a private painting lesson to a group of new painters.  She was working on a painting where she was using all grayed down colors for her next lesson plan.  We talked of getting into color ruts so I announced that I would do a predominately red painting (see yesterday’s painting).  Today I decided to do a green one.

Generally I attempt to keep a painting either warm or cool, so this is going just a little farther.  Maybe tomorrow should be purple … or blue …

One of the reasons that I don’t like painting in a group is that my paintings go through a really ugly stage.  I certainly don’t want someone to come along at that point in the painting and make a snap judgement about the quality, the process or the painting.  Sometimes at that “ugly stage” I begin to doubt myself that the painting will work at all, and don’t want the confirmation that it is indeed, ugly.  However, it is some of those paintings that I end up liking the most.  Like this one.   Keep plugging along at it!

I like to be the passenger in a car so that I can enjoy the view, however, this is often not the case.  So I have fleeting glimpses of wonderful scenery that I wish I could paint.  Every once in a while, I take my camera and with one hand take a photo for future reference.  I know … dumb and dangerous.
