The Art Guild to which I am a member issued a challenge to express an image of downtown Corvallis on 2nd between Madison & Monroe.  Last week I went downtown.  There was a fiercely cold wind and I had a bunch of other errands to do so took only about four photos but I did see these bikes so my decision was easy.  We will be showing these paintings, drawings or other expressions at the meeting on Monday.

Yes, it is an actual place in the Portland, Oregon area but unrecognizable it its incarnation here.

This is a study for a larger piece that I am working on right now.  Everyone who visited my studio today during Philomath Open Studios got to see the larger piece in the very first stages with the black gesso before the color goes on.  Tomorrow I will start to put in the transparent color and it will go through some very ugly stages.  I might have to put a sheet over it at this point!

Even though I was trying to hide the study so that I could work from it for the large one, I couldn’t help showing it to people as I explained my process.  It was sold, but I’ll ship it to her when I finish my large painting.

If you are in the area, today and next weekend (November 2 & 3rd, 2013) my studio will be open for the Philomath Open Studios Tour.

I remember a watercolor I worked on when I first started painting a million years ago, which was of houses on a hillside.  It was an exercise in glazing and was only that … it was an incomplete painting with an incomplete idea.  I kept thinking about that painting (long since trashed) while I was doing this one.   It is interesting to think back to the work that we do along the way.
