In an interview for an exhibit I had 18 years ago with my mother, I was quoted as saying that I would paint anything, “cars, trashcans, flowers, snow scenes …” and the same is true today.  With this scene from google maps street view, I painted the dog in the street, but would have been just as happy with the street view, or some of the old buildings.

What is the difference between impressionism and expressionism?

Impressionism painters (including Claude Monet and Camille Pissarro) often painted plein aire and were concerned with capturing an impression of the scene.  They often used pure, bright pigment without a lot of mixing to capture the essence, the light and color of a subject.

Expressionism painters (Edvard Munch, Gustav Klimt (some say) and Charles Burchfield (my opinion)) are more interested in explaining their feelings than depicting the subject accurately.   They often used distorted figures, bold colors and expressive brushstrokes.

I took photos of this dog with my phone outside of a market.  I felt sneaky as the owner was not around (I would have asked permission if she/he had been).  This was a large, beautiful dog with soft floppy ears and a very thick coat who was very uninterested in the fame of having his picture taken.
