I belong to a group called Vistas & Vineyards which is a group of artists that meets weekly between mid-May through mid-October to enjoy painting “en plein aire” at local sites.  I started this painting at “Moonshadow Lavender” in Albany, Oregon and finished it in the studio.   I took many artistic liberties however there really was a field of lavender and aspen trees.

Bow River runs through Banff, Alberta where I lived for three years.  Banff is a stunningly beautiful area and I was so lucky to be able to live, hike and enjoy the exquisite landscape.

When I first switched to acrylic from watercolor I used a lot of black to sketch in my image and built color up from there.  I still often sketch in my image with black paint.  In this painting, I enjoyed the old method of leaving more darks within the painting for dramatic value difference.

Below is a larger painting I did with this technique.  I covered up most of the black in this example.

Trees were taken from a different photograph, using my own color preferences, but inspired by Tom Thomson’s “Northern River.”  Tom Thomson was closely associated with the Canadian Group of Seven.

The sketch is so rough that I almost didn’t include it.  It is obvious that I did most of my planning by reacting to what I was putting on the canvas.  The sketch gave me a sense of what composition I wanted and how it would be lighter on one side than the other, but I really wanted to have an abstract, playful response to a grouping of trees and didn’t have much patience to put planning into this particular sketch.

This tree was actually in the Safeway parking lot.  I happen to love when the cities require a certain amount of vegetation in and around the buildings, parking lots and roadways as it totally changes the feeling of the place and allows some of the city rain runoff to do some good.  Plus, when I am waiting in the car in a parking lot, I get to draw something other than cars!

To me walking alone in the forest is one of the most soothing, calming and refreshing things we can do.  It is almost as though the trees act as a sponge taking all of the stress out of one’s body.

I’ve been working on a painting (different … not this one) for two days and I’m not nearly finished.  It may never be finished as it may never work.  It is a self portrait for a painting challenge.  I don’t enjoy having my photo taken, nor do I have much pleasure in doing portraits of any kind, let alone my own.  Perhaps this is why I am struggling.

Hence, “Release.”  It was a totally, purely pleasurable application of paint on canvas.
