It is amazing how many paintings one can get from one site visit!  This is the fourth painting from the Boston Mill/Thompson Mill park I visited in late June of this year.  Although several of the landscapes were started on site, not surprisingly these chickens moved too quickly for me to paint them. I took some photographs and worked from those.

I was sitting on a low stool and this chicken came right up to me.  Even though I could have reached down and touch it I didn’t want to alarm the bird and have it turn on me!

This is a lovely little Cavalier King Charles Spaniel who loves everyone.  She has amazingly dark and sincere eyes which I tried to capture.

I always start with a sketch to familiarize myself with the subject and it is a good thing I did.  I elongated her face a bit too much.  The sketched pup still looked sweet but she wouldn’t have recognized her reflection.  Not sure that she would once the painting was completed either, come to think of it.

The photo reference was generously given to me by Deborah Peterson.  Thanks Deb!

THANK YOU!
I wanted to thank everyone for coming out to see my work at the Clothesline Sale of Art yesterday.  I had great comments, sales and conversations.   I sincerely thank you all!

I know that some of you who live too far away would have liked to be there and wished me well.  Thank you as well.  It helps!

My friend, Donna, gifted me a “Yes!” canvas which is a very smooth canvas that accepts any kind of wet media.  Since I used heavy body acrylic paint in the manner in which I usually paint, the thing I noticed the most was its smooth surface.  I think that watercolorists that want to work on canvas would love it.  Perhaps I should have experimented a little more and used thinned acrylic to get a washy, watercolor kind of look.  Next time!  (Thanks Donna!).

A few weeks ago Carol Marine brought to my attention the Morgue File, which is a database full of photos which can be used for free.  I am drooling when I tell you that there are some pretty incredible high resolution photos.  This is where I got the reference photo for this painting of this Great Horned Owl.

Can you believe that I found this bird on Google Street view?  When in Venice, paint the birds 🙂  Okay, it isn’t a high resolution image, but in this case I was happy to work with the bird shape.  At first I thought it must be a crow because it was all black, but its shape wasn’t right.  I think it is a pigeon.  Click here to see the beautiful scene I ignored in order to paint the shape of a bird.

As many of you know I often paint from Google Maps street view.  Google generously allows artists to use these views as reference for painting or drawing without copyright infringement.

Precocial birds are those that have young that hatch fluffy and mobile (like killdeer, chickens and ducks).  The photo I used as reference was of a killdeer, thus my strange title for this painting.  Thanks to L. for use of the photo!

The photo below is from Beata who owns several of my bird paintings.  I thought she did a great job framing them in white.  They really pop and look great in this room.  Thanks Beata!
