The other day I heard a very loud call of a plaintive cow outside my studio. She was standing on the other side of the fence trying to get her head underneath the wire to reach the apples that had fallen onto the ground. I had no idea that cows had that much flexibility. I eased her problem by tossing a few over the fence which she gratefully munched. There is now quite a gap in the fence near the ground.

“Gentle Friend”

Some people have been wondering why I am painting cows. My studio faces a lovely farm with a herd of these gentle animals. It is a treat to see the calves bouncing and running and hearing the mothers call to them. I have painted this farm so many times, and the cows, the hay stacks, and the sheep. It is a treat to look out my windows and see them grazing.

The Caradon Team of Carolee Clark and Donna Beverly are working on a new painting series of cows. Carolee’s studio in Philomath, Oregon, just outside of Corvallis sits on the edge of a neighboring farm. Here the cows come within feet of her window, munching on the grass, and in the fall looking for apples from the apple tree. Donna has raised cows and enjoys their sweet personalities. It seems a natural fit for this new series of paintings.
