This is a lovely little Cavalier King Charles Spaniel who loves everyone.  She has amazingly dark and sincere eyes which I tried to capture.

I always start with a sketch to familiarize myself with the subject and it is a good thing I did.  I elongated her face a bit too much.  The sketched pup still looked sweet but she wouldn’t have recognized her reflection.  Not sure that she would once the painting was completed either, come to think of it.

The photo reference was generously given to me by Deborah Peterson.  Thanks Deb!

  1. Love this painting. We lost our beloved Cavalier King Charles on Valentines Day this year, they are the BEST. Your painting is lovely. I think it is difficult to capture the shape of the dog face while still keeping the sweetness, and you’ve really done it well.
