Many of you know that Katie Johnson has graciously given me permission to paint from her pet photographs.  However, she is skilled at a variety of subject matter, including the photo from which I drew inspiration for the painting above.  Click here to see more of Katie’s work.

Yesterday, there was an odd email in my box that said, paraphrasing, “seriously, expressionism, not abstract.”  It was only a few words and didn’t mention a particular painting.  I wasn’t sure what to make of it and I wish I could find it now because I know I didn’t delete it, but … it is one of those gems that make you think.  I know that my work is not abstract in the sense of non-objective abstract because there is a clear subject matter, but I have “expressed” it in a very personal way.  Pete @ whatever …… was right.  How does one pigeon hole their artistic expression?

After painting some very complicated paintings, I needed a change of pace (with this painting and the last one).  Some would say I’m changing my style.  This is something I am thinking of writing about in my January newsletter so I would love to hear if you agree.  What are your thoughts on an artist’s style?  What about your own style?  Do you think this is just a bit of an experimentation ….

This is a submission for the Virtual Paint Out blog. Their area of concentration this month is Eureka, California.

I admire the work of Canadian artist Lawren Harris (1885-1970) and have occasionally tried to incorporate some of his style into my work.  This painting was done in response to a challenge by Gloria Zucaro to paint something in the style of an artist we admire.  See the DPW challenge by clicking here.

Below are a couple of examples of Lawren Harris’ work.  There is a very good book called “The Group of Seven and Tom Thomson” by David P. Silcox, published by Firefly Books Ltd. (2003) if you want to see more.

I sketched this one four times before I got this composition to go on.  As you can see from the final painting, I made a lot of modifications during the creation of the work.  I took out the woman bending over (for being too distracting) and moved over to the right, the woman holding her hand to her hair.  I also moved the entire image over a bit to the left and changed the background as being too busy.  It worked as a drawing, but not in the painting.  It was a complicated subject.

This was done as a challenge for Daily Paintworks with a photograph supplied by Carol Marine.  You can check out the photograph that I worked from if you like.

This tree was actually in the Safeway parking lot.  I happen to love when the cities require a certain amount of vegetation in and around the buildings, parking lots and roadways as it totally changes the feeling of the place and allows some of the city rain runoff to do some good.  Plus, when I am waiting in the car in a parking lot, I get to draw something other than cars!

This is a Caradon painting (which is a collaboration between myself and a good friend, Donna Beverly).  We each take turns working on the canvas, until we both decide it is finished.  We sign them “Caradon.”  This name is a combination of the first part of each our names.  Although we haven’t been doing a lot of these collaborative works lately we just finished this one.

Donna and some of her students are  having a show called “Dancing Paintbrushes” at the Benton County Museum in Philomath, Oregon from October 7 to November 26, 2011.   She wanted to include some of the Caradon pieces in the show.
